Last week I went on vacation back to my dad’s hometown. Though my father has passed, I go back to where he was raised in Ohio once a year as I still have family living there. I enjoy my time with my Uncle and Aunt, my dad’s siblings, as we traipse around Northern Ohio visiting everything imaginable.
Ususally as I travel north I will listen to CD’s in my car until I cross the Indiana/Ohio border. Then I will change to Country music. Oh those banjos! I like listening to the djs from other cities as they commentate on whatever is going on in their city, or about the music, or even the singers. This year I found a Christian radio station and listened to it. I had heard of “Jesus Does” by We The Kingdom while back in my hometown on K-Love radio so I had already became a fan.
It seemed every time I switched to another Christian radio station that they had WTK’s song playing. Even when I was riding in my Uncle’s car he had a Sirius XM Christian radio station playing, and it came on several times. He’s a big fan, and it was cool to hear him sing along with the radio. I thoroughly loved it!
What I really love about the song is the slow chords stating simple truth. It starts out where everyone does… each morning God’s mercies are new (Lamentations 3:22-23). Then is progresses into what every person desires… love and embracing comfort. The chorus then gives praise to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit as they are given credit for saving us (me) from my past… “Cause that’s what Jesus does.” Luke 19:10 tells us that Jesus came, “to seek and save the lost.” Luke 4:18 even states: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,” which is of course from the Book of Isaiah.
The very next verse of the song is the Gospel followed by how powerful our Savior really is by has all authority and power to rescue the lost. Again it follows with a praise chorus directed to the Trinity, and the tag line “Cause that’s what Jesus does.” The remainder of the song tells us of the faithfulness of Abba Father which makes me think of Psalm 23.
The best line of the whole song is: “When I was a sinner he saved me from who I was.” How profound yet it’s 1 Corinthians 6:11, “And such were some of you.” I put this song on repeat so many times via Spotify and Alexa. It’s gospel truth needs to get into my head and my heart so deeply that it bursts out in praise to the One who could only do what this song repeats over and over. That’s what Jesus does.
